Obituary for Thomas J. Shuell

Thomas J. Shuell, age 80, retired professor at the University of Buffalo’s Graduate School of Education, died peacefully after a long battle with cancer on June 21st, 2018 at Roswell Park Memorial Institute.
Born in Kansas City, MO, he was adopted at birth by Dr. & Mrs. Gerald Joseph (Beulah) Shuell. In 1960 he married his high school sweetheart Anne L. (Bougher) and they had two daughters, Kathryn Anne and Lisa Marie. Anne passed away in 1997. He went on to receive his B.S. from Oregon State College after high school, and then spent 3 years as an officer in the US Navy in the Far East on the USS Boyd. He was the combat information and electronics officer and was off the coast of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis on the USS Eldorado.
Tom received his PH.D. in educational psychology in 1967 from the University of California, Berkeley. He and his family moved to Buffalo, N.Y. to join the faculty of the University of Buffalo, State University of New York, as an assistant professor of educational psychology. He moved up the ranks as an associate professor and professor.
During his career he published 40 book chapters, many articles in professional journals, and presented over 70 papers at professional organizations. He served as President of the Northeastern Educational Research Association. He served on the editorial board and was a consultant for numerous professional journals, along with serving as President of the American Psychological Association and the Northeastern Educational Research Association.
Throughout the years, he gave a lecture series at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia; was a visiting professor of education at University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand; and served as a Distinguished Fulbright Professor at the National College of Ireland.
After retiring, he met Judith Ann Frank and dated for 6 years, and they were married in 2007. Tom then became active in the United States Power Squadrons--America's Boating Club. During this period, Tom served as Commander of Swiftwater Sail and Power Squadron in North Tonawanda N.Y. Educational Officer of USPS and chair of National Development Committee. He was also actively involved in the TORCH club of Western New York.
He was the husband of the late Anne (Bougher) Shuell who died in 1997. He is survived by his wife Judith Ann, two daughters Kathryn (William) Anne Yarnes and Lisa (John) Marie Wojewoda. Along with two step daughters, Kathleen Marie Scalise and Raedene (Michael) Lou Zellner, and stepson Anthony (Jennifer) Stephen Scalise, nine grandchildren and two great children.
Friends may call at the Fretthold Funeral Home Inc. 1241 Oliver St. at Ward Rd. in North Tonawanda on Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 P.M., Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10 A.M. from St. John Lutheran Church, 6540 Main St, Williamsville. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, Cheektowaga. Flowers gratefully declined, memorials may be made to the Research Dept. of Dr. Elizabeth Griffith’s and Dr. Grace Dy at the Roswell Park Cancer Inst. The family would also like to thank staff of 5W.
